Visiting Aberdeen

Visiting Aberdeen

Aberdeen has much to offer visitors with its TWO old towns, Old Aberdeen (where the University is located) and Footdee (pronounced locally as 'Fitty') which is at the far end of the beach where the River Dee meets the North Sea.

This website will guide visitors through the many places to see during their time in the North East.

Hill Walking

Hill Walking

There is a wealth of opportunity for the hill walkers that visit the North East. And Stonehaven is a great place in which to base yourself as you explore the hills and mountains within easy reach. The websites below will guide you through hundreds of walks all over Scotland and the walkhighlands.co.uk website has a section devoted to Aberdeenshire and in particular the walks around Stonehaven.

Castles

Castles

There are so many castles in the Aberdeenshire region and beyond, though arguably none so dramatic and evocative as Dunnottar Castle perched on the cliffs just outside Stonehaven. The websites below contain lots of information about the different castles in this part of Scotland.

Golf

Golf

The North East gets a lot of visitors on golfing holidays and they are spoiled for choice with the variety of courses available to them. The course at Stonehaven Golf Club is located just to the north of the town, running along the top of cliffs with spectacular views - from personal experience we spotted some dolphins one evening as we made our way up the 4th fairway.

Bird Reserves

Bird Reserves

Five miles south of Stonehaven on the old coast road lies Fowlsheugh; the spectacular cliffs at Fowlsheugh are packed with 130,000 breeding (and very noisy) seabirds in the spring and summer, including guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes. You could see puffins and fulmars too. Also keep an eye on the water for grey seals, dolphins and minke whales – and please take extra care on the cliff walks - we don't want you inadvertently swimming with the dolphins!

Garden Visits

Garden Visits

The Scottish countryside in itself is like a huge garden for visitors to explore and enjoy. But there are also beautifully and carefully planted gardens for the discerning horticulturist.

With so many castles around, you can be sure there are some beautiful gardens for you to wander round and admire. And in Aberdeen's Duthie Park you will find the famous Winter Gardens which are stunning.
